Acute Injuries:

(not requiring surgical intervention)


  • Finger dislocations
  • Mallet finger 
  • Closed trauma (i.e. crush injuries)
  • Stable finger, hand or wrist fractures
  • Soft tissue injury (i.e. ligament tear or strain) 
  • Wrist sprains/strains
  • Repetitive stress injuries (i.e. carpal tunnel syndrome, DeQuervain's tenosynovitis)
  • Acute onset of decreased sensation or pain, unspecified.
It is recommended that any injury be reviewed by your GP or relevant consultant for appropriate diagnosis and relevant medical treatment prior to commencing hand therapy.  


Post-operative Conditions:

  • Dupuytren's contracture release (by surgery or injection)
  • Trapeziectomy
  • Finger, hand, wrist, forearm or elbow fractures (after immobilisation or surgery)
  • Tendon release/reconstruction
  • Joint manipulation/surgical release/reconstruction
  • Carpal tunnel release
  • Cubital tunnel release
  • Wrist reconstruction (soft tissue or bone)
  • Carpectomy
  • Nerve release/reconstruction
  • Artificial joint replacements (fingers, wrist)
  • Removal of ganglions, cysts, nodules

Chronic Conditions:


  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Complex regional pain syndrome
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Lupus
  • Chronic instability
  • Repetitive stress syndrome (long-standing)
  • Deformities due to chronic condition
  • Peripheral nerve disorders
